The Slayer

So our bearded mentor Chuck Wendig has issued another challenge. In which we used a random number generator to pick out two random titles. I got Buffy the Vampire and Monsters Inc. I knew this was going to be fun.

I haven’t seen a lot of Buffy, only three episodes to my name (I am a disgrace to the Whedonverse but I am a Goram brown coat not a slayed). Anyway, I kept this one short and hopefully sweet. Let me know what you think in the comments, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

It all started when I was a child.

I was in my grand-parent’s house, the first time I slept over and I remember being so afraid. It was a new and unfamiliar place.

“You are just home sick” my grandmother would say before telling me to go back to bed.

It’s funny, I believed her. But now I know why I was afraid.

Exhaustion slowly claimed me and I was just about to fall asleep when I heard the cupboard creak.

There was a draft, as if the cupboard opened up into a larger room.

I hid my head under the bed, peaking out only to see the cupboard door ajar. I was about to dismiss it. Blame the wind from an open window of a draft from the door.

But then the floors creaked and something heavy walked through the room. Clawed feet clicked the laminate floor, a long tail swept the floor and a low growl filled the air.

I tossed my covers aside ready to run, but no monster was there.

My room was empty save for the darkness. I was about to look over my bed until-

“RAAA-“

A large blue monster covered in fur and horns jumped from behind the bed. Its clawed hands reaching, its teeth were huge and ready to tear out my throat. But it was interrupted. Instincts took over my body, my hand karate chopped the beasts throat and closed off its air way. It chocked on itself as it stumbled and fell, clawing at its neck, gasping for air.

While it was down I watched with simple fascination. I realised how silly it was, that it would waste it’s time to scare a child, only to be killed by one.

I realise now what happened to me. You see, into every generation a slayer is born: one girl in all the world, a chosen one. She alone will wield the strength and skill to fight vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their number. I am the Slayer.

And yet I still wonder why it came that night. Yes I attract a lot of monsters and demons in my life. They want slayers dead after all. But I didn’t even know what I was, how could it? Did it even know?

I intend to find out. It’s been years since I have been in that room but now I am ready. I am going into that cupboard and I will defeat whatever darkness lurks inside.

  1. I think you’re a better writer than you give yourself credit for. Seriously, and no false praise which is never helpful. This story was interesting, well structured, and had a great balance of insight and intrigue. Confidence, brother. Go nuts and smash the next one out of the park.
